One week down and only so many more to go!! I would have to say that my first week in Dr. Bruce’s lab was quite successful. In this week, I focused on the many lab instruments that will be utilized in my summer research. Some of these instrumentation’s and techniques include: Aqueous surfactant preparation, sonication, and centrifugation. This week, I will become familiar with spectroscopy instrumentation and focus on measurements of fluorescence and absorption on Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes.
I was just curious-I bet all these lab instruments are quite expensive. If you could had a genie and he let you pick only ONE lab instrument you could place in your classroom-which one would you pick and why?
Considering you have all the space and money in the world!
If I had to choose any instrument for my classroom, honestly it would have to be a high frequency balance scale. I selected the high frequency balance beam because it is quite relevant and frequently used in the STEM work field. Also, this instrumentation is often the easiest to use in a classroom, yet students still incorrectly use them. If students can prove to me that they can properly utilize one of the simplest instruments, then likely I will become more confident in upgrading to a more complex system. I appreciate your question and your insights.
