Last day with lab assignment. Walking to my lab today, it seems like yesterday that I started. I have had overall a wonderful experience. Not everyday do you get a chance to see the cutting edge research that will help shape the future. I have enjoyed working with my staff, mentor, PI, and all of you. Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow. Cheers, Robert

Onions
Peeling the onion. Researched the tag we used in my experiments and came up with nothing. Walking to our meeting today I just realized I did not know what the tag was and wondered if my mentor made it. Just confirmed, she did. If it works it’s going to blow away current theory. Way cool stuff. Cheers
Friday Week 5
Well, I finished my experiments and it seems like I still have more work to due on the poster before turning today. Jen has been great to work with. I have started to get ideas for the lesson plan and hope to have a sound idea before I leave next week. Walking to the BRC today, I realized how much fun this has been and though I give up mist of my summer doing this, It’s been a great experience.
Cheers,
Robert
Week Four: Robert B
Well for a short week it has been busy. We cultured two bacteria, one gram positive the other gram negative. We added LACDF and DACDF to them, a fluorescent tag. We cultivated them, washed them, and make samples of them to image. Using the Nikon confocal, the L 700 laser was down, we scanned them to review next week and put the results in the poster. Happy 4th RET’s!
Week Three Update
Hi RET Mad Scientists,
This week I worked with my mentor and performed my project with taking bacteria, adding fluorphore adding to it to indenting peptidoglycan tagging the L amino acids in it. Its finished, and we are now going to ship the product and control to Sweden so they can let us know if it worked or not, Super excited about that. Hopefully, they will give us the results before the poster project is due. I enjoyed sharing my lab with y’all this morning and hope you have a great rest of the day.
Cheers,
Robert
Weeks One and Two
It’s been a crazy week and a half. Juan, my mentor, has shown me how to culture bacteria and mammalian cells. We have then added flourscent dyes to use confocal microscopes to analyze different parts of these cells. We have also worked on different dyes to get an understanding of what ultraviolet lights work of them. I have reviewed the bacteria cell walls, organic chemistry, mitosis and dna replication to get an idea of what is going on. Still a lot to learn and beginning to do my experiments the next few weeks.
