Week 4 Update – Some progress

Finally, after abandoning the cellulose and sticking to just clay, I’ve been able to produce our filter prototype. I created a press to make the holes (with varying success), and I’m hoping they’ll yield some good results.

Not much else to update on for this short week. We’re coating the clay in the titanium dioxide and testing this week with methyl orange to see how fast it degrades in UV light.

  1. Hey Frank!

That’s amazing that you’re able to produce your filter from clay! What size holes are you trying to obtain? Also, what would you call “success”? For example, 90% of the holes holding in place or 70%?

    1. We’re focusing on coating the ceramic in TiO2, so we haven’t aimed for a particular size of holes. If it stays on the ceramic after annealing, then that part is a success! 🙂

  2. How fast should it degrades in UV light? At what degradation rate do you consider successful? How often are you checking it?

    1. A group did a similar experiment last year with zinc oxide and methyl orange (6 ppm), and their’s took about 2 hours. We’re hoping for about 4 hours with the methyl blue (10 ppm).
